Special Needs Learning Support Assistant

This specialist school based in Plymouth offers an opportunity for those students that have been removed from a mainstream setting to continue to access high quality education. This is delivered through a number of different programs within the school but all with a common theme; investing in the students, providing a different environment to that of a mainstream school and encouraging them to start to value themselves again.

This type of education requires a particular set of attributes for you to display to become a successful member of the team. You should have drive and determination, patience and resilience and genuine desire to see these young people exceed their own expectations and gain the academic qualifications they are capable of. The work for the students is bespoke and set by a member of the teaching team. You will be asked to support the student you are assigned to with their learning, often whilst engaging in an activity away from the school.

This position would suit experienced support staff from a mainstream or SEN/D school setting, but we are equally keen to see applications from those that have worked with troubled, difficult or vulnerable teenagers and children providing coaching in sports, outdoor education at an activity centre, youth work or social work or similar. These students have been referred to the school because of their challenging and difficult behaviour, mostly, but not exclusively attributed to autism spectrum disorders.

Progression opportunities are excellent, the school has recently rewritten its development program for support staff. Starting in a support role such as this can offer opportunities to progress to managing a team of your own, and becoming part of the senior leadership group. Pay is good and way above the average for someone starting in a new support role in education.

There are various positions available for a September start, with interviews being held during the last couple of weeks of August. These are long term, temporary roles that could lead to contracted employment for the right person, generally positions will be between 3 and 12 months and reviewed on a termly basis. If you feel that you have suitable experience and the right attributes to be a success in a position like this then please apply for this role or contact us for further information.
