We have a fantastic opportunity for a Rehabilitation Officer (Visual Impairment), working at a Leading Local Authority in Greater Manchester. This is a temporary part time role, initially for the next 2- 3 months.

The Role

Your role will be to identify and deliver specialist rehabilitation interventions to visually impaired people, to enhance their skills and confidence and maximise their independence. You will support people at risk from harm or becoming dependent on others due to their sight loss.


You will act as an advocate for visually impaired people and the local authority, by helping to promote accessible services, dignity, equality, social integration and understanding of the impact of sight/sensory loss.

Working across a wide variety of service user groups, including people with dual sensory loss, Physical or learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, or mental health conditions.

Undertake specialist, person centred, visual impairment assessments in collaboration with the visually impaired person to identify their needs, aspirations and desired outcomes.

To plan, implement, evaluate and review services to the visually impaired person aimed at maximising and maintain independence, safety, dignity and choice.

Rehabilitation may include daily living activities, communication skills, mobility training, and low vision training

Provide Information on specialist equipment such as talking clocks, modified kitchen appliances, adapted computers, magnifying aids and enhanced lighting. Also advising on how to make the best use of any residual vision.

Teach safe ways to move about indoors and outdoors, within the home and other buildings. How to use a white symbol canes, crossroads, use public transport, planning and practicing safe routes.

To develop knowledge and skills in relation to assistive technology, and community equipment solutions. Providing a holistic assessment which may minimise risk, prevent functional or cognitive deterioration and maximise personal independence.

Key Requirements

  • Valid Enhanced DBS on the Update Service
  • Full UK Driving Licence, and access to a vehicle
  • Previous Rehabilitation Officer experience, (Visual Impairment)
  • Excellent people skills, being able to talk to children and families and senior professionals
