In this role you will support the development of the financial plans and strategies for the Commercial Property portfolios comprising various product lines. You will analyse and review these portfolios, using a range of metrics to spot trends, issues and opportunities and report results. You will also provide overall underwriting guidance and technical input to our underwriting community.

Working alongside our underwriting and operations team colleagues you will ensure that we have the appropriate underwriting governance and control framework through the regular review of underwriting guidelines, authorities, audit regime and our pricing framework.

Our people are our biggest asset so a key area of focus will be the continued growth of our underwriting capability to provide the technical expertise that will help us develop our business with broker partners.

Main Responsibilities:

To contribute to the profitable development of commercial lines business by:

- Setting the strategy and business plan for the Property exposures within our products and undertaking regular monitoring/analysis of the results and reporting on them
- Researching, recommending and agreeing pricing, underwriting criteria and product changes to ensure that products remain market comparable and continue to deliver profitable growth in line with the financial plans
- Ensuring the underwriting rates and rules are accurately applied both internally and externally
- Completing other activities over and above those listed in the role profile, appropriate to your skills and experience

Experience and knowledge
- An accomplished Property Underwriting Manager with strong technical underwriting and/or portfolio management experience in either or both disciplines. The job holder is likely to have worked in within a Head Office environment for a Commercial insurer
- The ability to assess technical risk, understand financial modelling techniques / metrics and apply that
knowledge to make commercially astute decisions within authority levels
- Strong awareness of the market and legal/industry developments and the ability to influence necessary change within the company


- Strong level of financial awareness and understanding of technical elements of insurance portfolios
- Strong interpersonal, literacy and numeracy skills with the ability to work collaboratively with others and
communicate persuasively and in a manner appropriate to the audience
- Strong problem solving and negotiation skills, capable of prioritising work to meet specified deadlines
with a focus on delivering results
- Proactive, innovative and able to take the initiative
