As one of the world's leaders in the design, manufacture, supply and support of specialised instrumentation products, my client works with the majority of the leading aerospace and turbo-machinery companies to develop bespoke technologies.

From their established Derby facility they've been instrumental in helping blue chip companies get their equipment and machinery into day to day use.

This is a Mechanical Design position, so engineering know how and experience is key to making a success of the role. Unfortunately, due to the experience required, this role will not be suitable for recent graduates.


As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will be responsible for:

• Providing detailed design, development and support of new and existing products
• Providing solid models with supporting calculations in order to verify the designs
• Producing detail and assembly drawings to BS and industry standards
• Create design concepts based on customer requirements and briefings
• Checking engineering drawings and designs to ensure suitability
• Supporting the manufacturing function to overcome any issues
• Developing design criteria for both products and systems, which includes test methods, production costs, quality standards and completion dates
• Planning and conducting experimental, environmental and operations tests on models and prototypes
• Taking and evaluating product data from inspections and conformance reports in order to establish conformance and any changes to meet customer quality and functionality requirements
• Writing technical reports based on the analysis of project requests to determine feasibility, ability to manufacture, costs and timescales
• Work closely with Engineering, Production, Quality, Purchasing and Commercial divisions to ensure the smooth production of quality products through the business

You’ll also need to be customer facing when needed, which includes occasional travel to customers to discuss specifics of projects. Because of this you’ll need to be able to travel without restrictions.


In order to be considered for this Mechanical Design Engineer role it is expected that you will:

• Carry either a relevant engineering degree or HNC/HND within mechanical engineering
• A background within aerospace / power generation / precision engineering
• Be skilled in the use of SolidWorks
• Have a solid understanding of mechanical engineering design principles and analysis techniques
• Be able to produce complete design packages (Concept / Modelling / Detail Drawings / Documentation)
• An ability to check engineering drawings and similar designs
• Have excellent communication skills and ability to discuss matters with other engineers and the customer’s representatives
• Have superb time management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at any one time

If you also carried the following it would also be beneficial:

• Knowledge & ability to perform thermodynamics & gas dynamic analysis (heat transfer)
• Knowledge based in instrumentation of any nature (Strain Gauging, Thermocouples, Pressure tubes, UCTS, etc.)
• Knowledge of basic FEA analysis
