With 7 miles of beaches and a huge injection of both public and private investment, Southend-on-Sea is a very vibrant and exciting place to work and live.

The borough has over 58 primary and secondary schools including a small number of special needs schools and a very successful university.

Southend is only 40 minutes from the city of London by train. We have 2 efficient mainline railway stations.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Group Manager SEN and Inclusion Services. The main purpose of this post is to:

Enable all children and young people from vulnerable groups to learn and achieve the best outcomes possible at each stage of their education.

To ensure the LAs statutory duties to identify, assess and meet the needs of children with SEN are fulfilled.

Develop the SEN strategy and policy for SEN, children out of school and those at risk of exclusion, for behaviour and safety and anti-bullying.

Lead and manage the SEN and inclusion teams and services, both commissioned and direct.

The key responsibilities will include:

To contribute to the aspiration that all educational provision in Southend is ‘good’ or better by leading on the school improvement agenda for special schools, vulnerable groups in the mainstream schools and the Pupil Referral Unit.

To challenge schools to raise the achievement of all children and young people in identified vulnerable groups including those with additional needs.

To ensure that all initiatives are fully integrated with the Learning and Improvement Strategy and supporting and challenging schools accordingly.

To enhance the capacity of schools to deliver additional services for vunerable children, in the context of Southend’s four-staged intervention process.

To work closely with School Support Partners to improve focus and impact on children and young people.

Commission and deliver professional development for SENCO’s.

The successful candidate will have a strong and secure detailed knowledge of current special educational needs legislation, together with a good all round Knowledge of good SEN practice in mainstream and special schools.

Ideally, you will have been working at a senior strategic level in a mainstream or special school, or related field.
