What is this role?
REED's IT Department is recruiting for a Development Manager to join its successful, dynamic and experienced in house development team made up of approximately 12 developers. They are in the early stages of adopting Agile practices, with an ultimate aim of moving towards a DevOps way of working. The team is responsible for developing all of REED’s core business systems, with a key focus on REED’s next generation recruitment platform, X3. Given the success to date and the appetite from both the business and clients, the team is increasing in size. Our platform is already used by some of the biggest brands in the UK.
X3 was a ‘green field’ product that rethought how to deliver HR products and services, to significantly improve the functionality we offer to recruiters, clients and candidates. It is the new 'go-to-system' for our corporate clients, and development is underway to prepare X3 for our principal business.
What will the role be doing?
The Development Manager role is focussed on the management, coaching, development and day-to-day leadership of a core team of developers, including the definition and adoption of new working practices and supporting toolsets. Their focus is predominantly on new development within the core application, based on Java, Groovy and Grails. There is a strong responsive front-end built with HTML5, CSS 3, Bootstrap and Angular.JS. We additionally use Drools and Apache Activiti Workflow.
You will control and allocate workloads across the development team, set and manage performance against KPI’s, define best practise and oversee the day-to-day operation of the team. As we are early in our adoption of an Agile development approach, you will have a crucial role in shaping our end-to-end SDLC, defining what Agile means to REED and how our development teams redefine themselves to increase efficiency, quality, predictability, time-to-market and responsiveness to change. Our journey towards DevOps will also be top of your agenda.
You will act as the main point of contact between the development teams and the Technical Architect, Product Owner, BA and QA teams. With a strong technical background you will be able to make pragmatic decisions around strategic architecture, programming approaches and solution design. There is no explicit expectation of hands-on coding, but it is essential that you have significant previous experience of software development, and are current on the latest approaches, practices, tools and technologies in this space.

Who are we looking for?
• Hands-on development experience and technical expertise, 5+ years (Java background beneficial but not essential.)
• Development Manager experience; or be a strong senior developer or team lead, looking to step up
• Experience of Agile project management such as Scrum and Kanban
• Strong troubleshooting skills
• Team management and leadership experience
This role is ideal for someone with the ability to drive and build an existing team, particularly where they are in a technology transformation programme that is taking the department from Waterfall to more Agile / DevOps ways of working.
