To be responsible for providing children and young people with food in adequate quantities, properly prepared wholesome and nutritious, with regard to their cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds and dietary needs and choices.( including the choice of vegetarian meals for children who wish it)
To be responsible for planning menus with varied diet and ordering preparing nutritiously balanced meals that are culturally appropriate and medically sensitive.
DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE TO Respite Manager
To maintain a high standard of recording in relation to menu planning, food ordering and stock rotation.
To organise the time so that meals are prepared within the hours allocated and served on time.
When necessary to prepare a variety of different meals required to meet the special dietary requirements of the children,
To ensure that all foods produced are prepared and cooked using the correct method, complying with healthy and safety and food hygiene standards.
To maintain kitchen cleanliness and hygiene at all times.
To organise and clean the kitchen and equipment as per their instructions.
To ensure kitchen equipment is kept in good condition and report any faults to the Shift Leader.
To order food supplies as required.
To be responsible for receiving and checking deliveries for quality and quantity against the official order.
To ensure that stock rotation is practised and stores are maintained neat, tidy, clean and safe
To assist Supervisor with stocktaking.
To communicate with the staff team and Children/young persons within the Unit.
To be a member of the staff team; to attend and contribute at staff meetings.
To inform the Manager immediately should poor practice be observed or alleged, or if a complaint is made by a child/young person or parent/carer; to ensure that the responsible Social Worker is informed and the appropriate Safe Caring and Child Protection procedures are followed.
To plan and create nutritious balanced meals with which the children / young people can identify; ensuring that their Culture, Religion, medical needs and disability is positively reflected.
To ensure that all work carried out does not pose a risk to self or others.
To participate in personal staff development and undertake any necessary training relating to the post.
To have a knowledge of Health and Safety Legislation relating to usage and storage of food.
To maintain a safe environment, complying with Health & Safety and other legal requirements
To have knowledge of Food Hygiene Legislation and keep abreast of current legislation relating to food.
To be able to lift and manoeuvre cooking utensils appropriately.
Undertake other duties as directed by or on behalf of the Director providing they fall within the scope and range and are commensurate with the grade of the post
Knowledge & Experience
Experience of cooking for large numbers & planning/implementing menus
Knowledge of Health and Safety at Work
Knowledge of the nutritional requirements of children & food hygiene
Skills and Abilities
Able to implement knowledge of relevant legal framework and procedures relating to food
Able to prepare and cook food to a high standard
Able to maintain a high standard of kitchen cleanliness and hygiene
Able to cook correct portions of food for each meal
Able to plan own workload to meet daily deadlines
