We are currently recruiting for a Paralegal/Legal Assistant (Childcare) to join Leicestershire Council on an interim basis until September 2020.

This is great opportunity for an experienced paralegal or legal assistant with experience with Childcare Law and Practice, or for someone working towards a paralegal qualification to gain invaluable experience.

A day in the life of this role will include to following:

  • Liaising with external agencies such as Health, Police, Probation and Courts with a view to securing co-operation in preparation of cases for Court
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with Children & Young People’s Service, as well as schools. Responding to requests for legal advice and support in relation to Childcare Law and Practice
  • Providing advice or service on standard queries and making referrals for complex queries
  • Providing legal support to your Team Leader and solicitors in the delivery of high quality, timely and proactive advice to departments. This will include;
    • Drafting letters, Court Applications and responses, Statements, Chronologies and Case Summaries and attending court to assist Counsel and take notes of evidence
    • Service of Notices, Summons, Statements, Court Bundles and other documents on Courts and other persons
    • Undertaking research in Childcare Law as required
  • Identifying in appropriate cases any costs to be recovered by the County Council, issuing invoices accordingly and dealing with the necessary follow up
  • Supervisions and development of Paperwait
  • Checking the availability of Experts and other witnesses for Court proceedings to include notification to them of dates, times, venues and practical arrangements for attendance at Court Hearings
  • Liaison with Courts as to dates of Hearings and attendance of Solicitors or other officers of the County Council
  • Provision of advice in relation to the content of reports for Court prepared pursuant to s.7 and s.37 Children Act 1989. (9)
  • Attendance at Child Protection Case Conferences in appropriate cases. (9)
  • Attend of represent the Council at meetings as appropriate to the level and responsibility of the work, such as multi agency meetings
  • Filing and general administrative tasks within the Legal Services section such as opening and closing files, compiling and maintaining Court Bundles as required

We are looking for a Paralegal/Legal assistant with the following experience and qualifications:

Qualified, Part Qualified or studying towards a Legal qualification or equivalent

Experience with legal documentation and language

Experience drafting letters and reports

Ability to understand and apply statutory provisions and procedures

Experience attending Court with Counsel and taking notes of Hearings

Experience and knowledge of Child Care Law and Practice is highly desired, alongside experience working in a similar role within Local Government

In return our client offers:

Temporary contract until September 2019

Pay rate of between £10.52 - £20 per hour dependant on experience

Working hours 8:30am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday
