General Catering Assistant

I am currently recruiting for an experienced Catering Assistant to join a College based in the Luton area.  The position is on an immediate, permanent basis in which interviews are available for as soon as possible.

To provide catering services to ensure high quality visitor experience is maintained at all times and to optimise income generation.  This will include supervising students and providing them with support and guidance to maintain high standards of service.

Main duties include:

- Provide consistently high standards at all times when welcoming visitors to the campus; processing sales; answering visitor' queries and providing information; 
- Assist  in the preparation of food and drink, ensure all food products are attractively displayed and correctly priced;
Service customers and actively promote catering sales; use an electronic till and cash handling
- Provide the highest possible standards of presentation ensuring that displays, fixtures, fittings and premises are maintained to high standards of cleanliness: clean tables and catering equipment; wash up manually and using a machine
- Ensure the security and safety of visitor, staff, students, the premises, stock and cash at all time
- Supervise students to ensure they undertake a range of front of house duties to the standard expected by the organisation and in accordance with health and safety regulations 
- Assist in the delivery of events and hospitality across the campus including set up, stewarding and break down
- Operate kitchen equipment as required
- Carry out cleaning duties as required including laundry of tea towels
- Assist lecturers/trainers/assessors working in the teaching kitchens, Cafe B and the Restaurant kitchen by washing up, collecting equipment and consumables requested and ensuring that they are replaced after class
- Ensure utensils and equipment are returned by students and that they are clean and not broken 
- Ensure consumables kept in kitchens are at the correct stock levels  replenishing form suppliers when required 
- Prepare and distribute food to the training kitchens, Cafe B and the Restaurant Kitchens 

The following essential qualifications, qualities, skills and experience are considered necessary in this key post. The essential criteria will be assessed in the following ways. 

Education and professional qualifications: 
- Basic food hygiene qualification or willing towards
- Food production qualification or willing to work towards 
- Good general level of education (including Maths and English at least at Level 2 

- A1 Award or willing to work towards 

- Food production/food service background 
- Previous experience of working within a catering operation
- Experience of cash handling

- Previous experience of working in an education / learning environment with direct contact with students
- Experience of supporting catering and conference operations
- The ability to set up, deliver events/hospitality and break down 
- Experience of maintaining stock control 

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities 
- Excellent communication and customer care skills with a customer centred approach to service delivery 
- Good numeracy skills and cash handling
- An understanding of customer service and ability to provide this to the highest standard 
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures
- Ability  to work effectively within a team and also on own initiative
- Ability to demonstrate knowledge and commitment to Equality and Diversity and how this has to be applied in previous roles
- A knowledge and understanding of the requirements of Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults in the education sector as applicable to this role
- A knowledge and understanding of health and safety standards and best practice
