Technology (IT & Telco) Market Overview
2013 was a positive year for the Technology and Telecom sectors with hiring cautious but positive thanks to the stability of Asian markets. After the usual slowdowns at the year-end festive period, there was a perceptible pick up in activity at the start of 2013. We observed an air of optimism with an increase in head count approvals, especially for roles that had been placed on hold a few months ago.
Candidates with strong customer facing skills, in-demand product knowledge and the ability to sell high value complex deals in ICT will remain sought after as clients continue to hire "Hunters" to capture new business. A lack of multi-skilled professionals, either within functions or with a variety of product knowledge has led to clients opening their hiring to candidates from within the region.
Whilst we have seen a healthy trend in hiring for newly created roles, some employers are still waiting to find the "perfect package" of applicants who tick all boxes in terms of skills, experiences and product knowledge combined with the perfect set of personality attributes, leading to some roles being open for a longer period of time. As such, despite being an employers' market, we are grappling with a lack of skilled professionals, especially in niche and in-demand areas like mobility, cloud and BI etc where candidates get snapped up with competitive packages.
Overall, the hiring outlook is expected to remain conservatively optimistic for the rest of 2014, with an underlying current of caution and modest salary growth and average bonuses.
