Sales & Marketing (Retail) Market Overview
2013 was once again a fruitful year for the Recruitment market in the Retail Industry. As many international brands continue to start up their presence through distributors or by setting up subsidiary offices in Singapore, there is also a strong trend of companies building their SEA offices. With the slow down of China, companies need to find their next growth engine and where else is a better country to choose as a platform?
Professionals within specialised functions such as Retail Operations, Visual Merchandising, Store Design Management and Training were in high demand and hiring will continue to remain active in 2014. Beauty companies continue to hire aggressively, seasoned marketers and communication professionals from the beauty / luxury fashion sectors were highly sought after for their expertise and their reach within the local media. With the expansion of the SEA business, there are constant requests from clients to actively look at candidates who are open to relocating to the neighbouring SEA markets as well.
While the consumer buying behaviours remain cautious, we still expect retail clients to continue investing in the right talent to grow their business. Skill shortages in the area of retail operations and frontline sales staff will remain a constant pain point for businesses but it is a no end race to bring in the best retail talents, as they are they key to continue wooing customers and creating an exceptional shopping experience in this highly competitive market. As the year progresses and the war for talent heats up, employers will have to come up with out-of-the-box solutions and tap non-traditional sources to build their talent pipeline.
