10 reasons to move to Sheffield
Should I be looking for jobs in Sheffield?
Yes! We think Sheffield is the place to be. Not only does it boast fantastic career opportunities - whether you're a teacher, social worker, engineer, accountant or anything in-between - there's a whole host of other reasons we think Sheffield is the best city in the UK, whatever you're looking for.
Read on for our top ten reasons why #SheffieldIsSuper
1. The people (or "t'folk")
The 4th biggest city in the UK is bound to produce some famous faces - Michael Palin, Lord Coe and Joe Cocker to name just three - but it's not just those in the spotlight that we love. The team at REED Sheffield meet hundreds of locals every week and they're all friendly, lovely people - well done Sheffielders! Not only are they friendly but in 2013 Sheffielders were found to be the happiest folk in the UK!
2. The food & drink (or "snap")
From the Michelin-starred Old Vicarage to authentic Chinese cuisine; from microbreweries to Henderson's relish and Thornton's chocolates; from Our Cow Molly's local dairy to Yee Kwan's Asian inspired ice creams, Sheffield has everything you could wish to eat or drink, and more! Sheffield Food Festival in May is an excellent place to start.
And you've not had fish n chips til you've had a Sheffield Fishcake.
3. The music scene
Pulp, ABC, Def Leppard, Joe Cocker, Longpigs, Human League, Richard Hawley, Toddla T, Arctic Monkeys... Sheffield has a rich musical heritage, and plenty of venues, including The Leadmill, Plug and the larger Motorpoint Arena in which to discover the (inevitable) next big thing. And tickets to Tramlines Festival (officially the UK's most visited festival in 2012) are a steal at just £12 per day.
4. The sport
It's not all United vs. Wednesday; Sheffield FC are the oldest football club in the world and Hallam FC still play at the world's oldest remaining football ground! And the two teams still play the world's oldest derby (talk about a long-standing rivalry!). There's also cricket, ice hockey, basketball, boxing, and - of course - the World Snooker Championship at The Crucible. Sport aplenty!
5. The history
Although the area known now as Sheffield has had settlers since at least the last ice age, Sheffield really came into its own as the heart of the Industrial Revolution. The steel & manufacturing industry remains at the heart of the city and it's culture. And it's been joined in more recent history by the likes of the Peace Gardens, the Winter Gardens and the Millennium Galleries.
6. The location ("Weer it is")
Centrally located, Sheffield is right in the middle of everything. Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham are all within 30 miles, and you can reach Liverpool, Newcastle and London in two hours by train - so, even if it's not in Sheffield, you're never far from the action.
7. The green space
The Steel City is also England's greenest city with over 200 parks, woodlands and gardens. Over half the population of the city live no more than 15 minutes from open countryside, and a third of the city lies within the Peak District, offering spectacular scenery and a wide range of outdoor activities for all its residents.
8. The safety
Sheffield is officially the safest big city in the UK, and the most peaceful urban area in England, due in part to the city leaders' emphasis on its diverse community's engagement and integration. The schools are excellent too, making Sheffield the ideal place to raise a family.
9. The cost
And while the standard of living is evidently high, the cost of living is low (go figure!). Sheffield living costs are 10% lower than the UK average and 25% lower than in London. 'Nuff said.
And our final reason why Sheffield is super is... *drum roll*
10. The tea! Well, kind of...
Because, after all that sport, music and walking through the Peaks, you'll need a really good cuppa. And because Sheffield has lovely soft water, you can get a proper brew up here.
If we've convinced you that Sheffield is in fact the greatest place on Earth, and you're itching to move here, you can find out more about our recruitment capabilities on the REED Sheffield office page or search all our available jobs in Sheffield. We hope you join us soon!
