Week 2 – Elaine Dodds, Dementia Care Unit Team Leader, Gateshead
Nominated by her Manager, Lisa: Elaine was caring for a lady in the later stages of life, who was due to be moved on to a Nursing unit. Elaine recognised that she was able to provide better care than the service user would receive in the nursing unit and asked for her stay on her unit, despite the extra workload this would mean, and promised the lady would receive the best care, which she did.
Elaine built good relationships with the service user's sons, and when one of them informed her they were going to cancel their holiday due to his mothers ill health Elaine encouraged her son to go ahead with his booked holiday. Elaine promised to send him a text every day so he was aware of how his mother was and the son was able to take his well earned break. Elaine rang the home daily for an update prior to sending her text, and, as promised, sent the text every day.
Elaine never bragged about this, or asked for plaudits. In fact the first our nominator heard of this was she received a lovely letter from the service user's son about the care his mother received and how wonderful Elaine is.

Week 3 – Specimen Reception Team, Hammersmith Hospital
Nominated by their manager, Beata: "They all go an extra mile to make sure that both IN and OUT patients as well as local GP surgery patients blood samples are processed within couple of hours of being received, processing around 4000 blood samples every day! In spite of acute staff shortages the team always stay on in the evenings until 8pm to finish the work load. They all take turns to cover the weekend duties and provide the local community with a 24/7 service, also covering services during Christmas and all other Bank Holidays. In spite of their long working hours they have found time to study further and develop themselves - they are all qualified Medical Laboratory Assistants, who have just finished their NVQ Diploma 3 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities."
Beata and her team, with their John Lewis/Waitrose vouchers – they are planning a team buffet, so look out for more pictures of that coming soon!
Week 3 Runner up – Selamawitt Kassa, Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the Blood Transfusion Department at Hammersmith Hospital.
Here is her Extra Mile story from her manager, Andrew Osei-Bimpong:
"Selamawitt stands out from the rest in literally going the extra mile when it comes to work which needs clearing. Selamawitt has an excellent work ethic and would always come to the rescue whenever we are struggling to cover a deficient shift. She would also not hesitate to stay behind and clear the work and would not mind skipping a tea break to finish off any outstanding work. She continues to be the unsung heroine every day and yet her attitude stays the same. She is also one of the best team players I have ever managed and would always endeavour to be the peace maker in times of conflict."

Week 4 - Kris Walley, Interim Homecare Team, Edinburgh
Kris was nominated by his manager, Christine:
"Kris is an excellent carer, he spends extra time with service users when he doesn't need to and goes above and beyond his role. He is extremely flexible and took it upon himself to visit a service user who he felt was socially isolated, going back in his free time to do crosswords and play cards, even though this was not a delegated task."
Kris has chosen to treat himself to a well deserved spa day. Enjoy!
