Extra Mile Winners
"We care that you care"
Week 7 Winner
A huge congratulations to our week 7 winner - Samantha Smith, a Care Worker from Oldbury, West Midlands! Sammy was nominated for the award by her client's granddaughter, Tracie. Tracie said:
"Sammy is a care worker who took care of my Nan so she could stay in her own home, until she passed away. Nothing was too much trouble and we actually could not have kept Nan at home without her help. As Nan grew more frail she would just want Sammy to take care of her - in her end times I lived with Nan and Sammy still came every day. She would come during the night if we needed her, even though she wasn't working. We were also allowed to call her on her day off if Nan wanted her, and even when Nan was in hospital Sammy would come and visit.
When Nan passed away Sammy initially felt she couldn't stay in the care profession. Thankfully, she did because it would be a sadder place without her! She has a love for all her patients and she is patient and kind with them all. She is wonderful."
Week 8 Winner
The biggest thanks goes to our winner, Charmaine Benjamin, a Healthcare Assistant at Jaffray Care Home in Birmingham. Charmaine was nominated for the award by her colleague, Ashley:
"I would like to nominate Charmaine because I have never seen some work so hard before - she is a true inspiration. She is the most selfless person I know, she is ALWAYS putting others before herself.
Quite often people worry about putting their family member into a care home, but Charmaine is a true asset to the company. All the residents absolutely adore her for all she has done for them, they feel loved, appreciated, well cared for. She treats everybody as an individual, as though they were her own flesh and blood. She helps them to feel involved and reminds them daily of how special they are.
Charmaine is always willing to go the extra mile, above and beyond, and for that reason there is nobody else I strongly believe deserves to be recognised more."
Week 9 Winner
Our winner from week 9 was Katie Fife, a young carer from Liverpool. Katie was nominated by her friend Samantha, who said:
"Katie is a young carer, a student and an ambassador for young women everywhere representing England in the finals of Miss Galaxy UK. In her spare (!) time is also an Ambassador for Barnardo's.
Katie came to us as she wanted to give something back to Barnardo's for the support and care she received from our Action with Young Carers Project in Colquitt Street, Liverpool. She is a fashion student at a local college so has recruited her fellow students to organise a high profile fashion show in aid of Barnardo's, that features other young carers as some of the models. The event will feature a high end line, and high street line and a selection of designs made from re-cycled clothes donated to our Liverpool Charity Shops. Katie is positive, tenacious and inspiring.
She genuinely cares about making a difference to peoples lives, without seeing it as an arduous task - just something she needs to do. She is a fantastic team player as well as being a strong and inspirational leader. For Katie there are no barriers, only opportunities. I would like to nominate Katie for the Extra Mile award as i think it will recognise her for the hard (unpaid) work she does for the benefit of others, motivate others to do the same, and allow Katie a rare moment to think about herself."
Well done Katie - you are greatly appreciated!
