Hospitality and leisure outperforms the market on 2019 salaries

Salary levels across the hospitality and leisure sector grew strongly last year, as the industry witnessed salary increases across a variety of job roles, according to new data released by Reed Hospitality & Leisure today (Wednesday 29 January 2020). 

From analysis of 7.5 million jobs posted since the start of 2016, the Reed Hospitality & Leisure Salary Guide 2020 – part of the company’s annual suite of salary guides – found that salaries in the hospitality and leisure sector outperformed other sectors going into 2020 despite a downturn in the number of roles advertised.

The salary growth has resulted in an average salary across the sector jumping to £30,535, compared to the 2018 figure of £28,775.

Hospitality and leisure not the only sector showing growth

In addition to the reported leading salary growth witnessed in the hospitality and leisure sector, the technology sector experienced 13.8 per cent growth in the level of advertised roles, while the business support sector saw an increase of 5.4 per cent in the past 12 months.

Despite tough trading conditions reinforced by business and consumer uncertainty caused by Brexit, the sector has been able to improve salary levels.

Sam Baldwinson, Reed Hospitality & Leisure expert, said: “The hospitality and leisure sector has been affected by the economic and political fallout caused by Brexit with a significant number of the sectors’ workforce consisting of EU migrants, and consumer confidence at a low. However, it has continued to perform robustly, maintaining excellent salary  growth for employees. We predict that the upturn in salary  over the past year will continue into next year, which will be a welcome trend for existing employees, as well as helping to attract talent to the industry.”

Businesses recruiting to adapt to changing business climate

Of the salary increases identified, some roles have benefitted more than others in the last 12 months. And, the biggest percentage of wage increases can be seen below the £40,000 mark, including demi chef de partie (23%) and head chefs (4.1%).

For salaries above £40,000, roles with the highest increases include operations managers at 6.8%.

Baldwinson continued: “As employers look to fill the skills shortage potentially left by returning EU migrants, they will need to offer a great working environment and culture to appeal to the best talent, while ensuring they get the right pay rates.
